Fourteen Months

July 15th, 2013

And finally, pictures that aren’t terribly overdue!  These, too, have just been haning out on the camera but since I need to get the card cleaned off before our trip, I had to get this done. Nothing like a little procrastination! Catherine is now saying (in Chinese): give you and hello…and for the life of me, I can’t remember the others right now. DSC_0043 DSC_0025 DSC_0011 DSC_0010

Thirteen Months

July 14th, 2013

Also just sitting around, and they were taken the day she was 13 months old. By this time she was saying–in Chinese–“mommy,” “daddy,” “grandpa,” “grandma,” “big brother.” She also says “bye-bye” and makes a sound for when she needs/goes #2…and she knows the kiddy word for her brothers “little boy part.” SomeonDSC_0068 DSC_0064 DSC_0045 DSC_0073 DSC_0007e likes to run around without his clothes on after baths and apparently she saw it, he told her what it’s called, and now she says it whenever big brother runs around sans undies.

First Birthday

July 14th, 2013

A few months late getting these up…but they were taken the day after her birthday and have just been waiting for me to find time to upload them. The Sunday before she turned one, she took a few steps by herself, but didn’t really start walking until she was one year and two weeks old. About a month later than Nathaniel, but there are two girls–one a month oldDSC_0008 DSC_0012 DSC_0013er, the other two days older–who still aren’t walking, so she’s doing just fine.

Eleven Months

April 16th, 2013

DSC_0031 DSC_0032 DSC_0026Although a week late in being posted, they were only a day late in being taken. Catherine can now stand by herself for about a minute, and did take a step on the day she turned 11 months! She also started saying “mama” again, though not very purposefully. Lots of people say that she’s tall, but Chinese grandparents are already saying that she’s “behind” because she can’t walk, unlike the 9 month old they know at the playground, nor does she say four words as that 9 month old does. I should be used to it by now; they still compare Nathaniel to his cousin who’s eight months younger…and have been since the little boy was born 4 years ago!

Ten Months

Last week our little girl turned 10 months old!  Since she’s VERY mobile now, it was impossible to keep the numbers and letters in place. Oh, and we couldn’t find all of the letters to spell “months” so we just abbreviated it to “mos.”

She’s wearing the dress that I made her for the Chinese New Year…not red, but at least she got something new, since most of her wardrobe consists of hand-me-downs from friends.  Not a bad thing by any means–well, to Santiago and I–but her Chinese grandparents insisted we get new clothes for the kids or the holiday. So I did the frugal thing, and made her a dress for about $3.  (Well, the pattern cost me $10 for the download, but it goes up to size 5, so I should be able to use it dozens more times.)

She can stand by herself for a few seconds and is an expert at walking along the edges of the couch, television stand and beds. She’s been drooling for the past month, so we’re eagerly expecting new teeth to appear, but so far she’s still got the six she had at 8 months.  Last month she started saying “mama” but soon realized it’s much easier to say “baba” so that’s her word of choice!

Nathaniel, Xiang and Catherine having fun with some fabric from my mom. Santiago’s younger sister’s family came here on New Year’s Day and ended up spending two nights at our house. The boys had fun playing and kept each other entertained. Nathaniel’s under a map of the world and Xiang is under a layout of a town–the same one which him and Catherine are playing on in the first picture.

Seven Months

December 9th, 2012

These were taken just minutes before Catherine was taken to get her first haircut…and shaved bald!  Santiago and I had to go signt the contracts for our house, so Grandma took her to get this haircut which, in her opinion, was six months overdue.

Typically babies get their first haircut when they’re one month old and then periodically thereafter–to make the hair grow faster.  Nathaniel had his first haircut at 8 months because I kind of freaked out on everyone when they sprung this previously-unknown-to-me news at lunch one day. “Oh, he needs to go for his haircut tomorrow,” said one of the grandparents.

My reaction scared them enough, that when I did calm down and realize that it’s just hair, and gave them permission to do this, they wouldn’t.   I wasn’t too thrilled about Catherine’s haircut since her hair has been growing in nicely for the last few months, but better now than when it’s longer.  Now to just make sure they don’t shave it off again in the summer like most other girls under the age of five.

Six Months

November 28th, 2012

Our little lady

Though it’s taken a good three weeks to get up, this was taken the day after her six month birthday.  Her first two teeth are now through and she can sit up for a couple of minutes before she collapses on top of herself.  She’s gotten amazingly good at going to sleep on her own at naptime and bed time.  Once she’s swaddled, kissed, told goodnight and laid down, I turn on her little music thing from her American grandma  and leave her be.  She’s come a long way from crying for hours on end (when she was just born) to half an hour (a few weeks ago) to less than five minutes (now).  She usually just “talks” to herself, and may let out a few cries, but she goes to sleep and stays asleep for a long, long time.  Of course her morning nap, Chinese grandma holds her, rocks her, sings annoying songs to her, tickles her and then wonders why Catherine wakes up once she’s placed in bed.  Everytime I put her down my way when grandma is here, Catherine gets picked up and held…even when she’s not crying!  When she does stay asleep, it’s never for more than 30 minutes.  But, I’m thrilled that Santiago is supportive of “my way” and that I will get back about 60 FULL DAYS of my life by not holding her and doing things the Chinese way!

1st Family Photo

September 17th, 2012

“It’s about time!” is what you’re probably thinking.  Yeah…I feel the same way.  It just seems that we’re never all together at a time when:

A-The kids are in a reasonably good mood.

B-They are clean.

C-Iam properly bathed, have clothes that look decent that aren’t drying on the line and I feel like taking a photo.

D-The grandparents aren’t around to comment on the use of a disposable diaper/the attire I dress them in.

So, without further ado, here’s what we look like (as of two weeks ago, when it was really taken):

One of about a dozen photos that were taken.
